Kaolin deposit at Meetiyagoda, southwestern Sri Lanka 31 clay deposits are shown in Figure 1. These deposits occur in lowlying coastal plains within the HC.
The significance of this finding is that Sri Lanka had the tradition of pottery during its proto historic period where there were no urban settlements and the country consisted of rural, sedentary village settlements. It is these communities that were responsible for the earliest dated earthenware in Sri Lanka.
